A grassroots movement is addressing air pollution through citizen activism rather than government intervention. The audio documentary series “Clearing the Air,” developed through a partnership between Sustainable Asia and the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung’s Asia Global Dialogue Programme, tells this story.
The focus centers on Lahore, where two key figures drive change: Ayesha Nasir, a former physician and journalist, established a mothers’ movement concerned with children’s health and environmental protection. Simultaneously, Abid Omar, a citizen engineer, developed systems to pump out real-time air quality data for public knowledge.
The podcast features conversations with Rafay Alam examining political and social dimensions of pollution, while exploring practical steps individuals can implement to improve air conditions. The series aims to inspire Pakistan’s younger generation to champion cleaner air initiatives.
The five-episode audio documentary extends beyond Lahore to cover Bangkok, Jakarta, New Delhi, Kathmandu, and South Korea, demonstrating a regional commitment to addressing Asia’s air quality challenges through community-led advocacy and awareness campaigns.
